Scbwarzscbild's hypothesis on the electronic nature of the inner Corona has two important consequences, which may be directly tested by observation. In the immediate proximity of the Sun the thermal velocity of the free electrons must average about 350—450 km/sec; this speed will broaden the Fraunhofer lines, which iN the solar spectrum have a width of some tenths of an Angstrom and less, to such an extent, (width of order of 15 A and more) that they will nearly or completely disappear. Really, Fraunhofer lines are not observed in the spectrum of the inner Corona, and this fact is usually regarded as favourable for Schwarzschild's hypothesis. But this holds only for the usual narrow Fraunhofer lines, while for broad and strong lines, such as H and K, the state of things must be different. Special attention was paid to this matter independently by C. A. Shajn and D. Menzel during the 1936 eclipse. Both observers found that within 2'—4' above the Sun's limb the spectrum of the inner Corona is devoid of any traces of the H and K lines. On the other hand Grotrian noticed on spectrograms of the 1929 eclipse a marked depression of the continuous background in the region of H and K at the heigth of 14 above the Sun's limb. G. A. Shajn showed by detailed computations that the H and K lines in the spectrum of the inner Corona must be still so strong that they are comparable in depth with the hydrogen lines in A type stars. Thus, strictly speaking, the above argument turns against the hypothesis and not in its favour. Or, one must look for such an alteration of the hypothesis, which would imply not thermal velocities of the electrons but average speeds of the order of some thousands of km/sec. However at the present state of things, one must recognize that Schwarzschild's hypothesis of the electronic nature of the inner Corona is in partial contradiction just with those observational data, which are usually brought forward for its justification, since the thermal speeds of the free electrons must, from one side, distort the energy distribution within the continuous spectrum, and are, from the other side, insufficient to explain the absence of the absorption lines H and K of ionized calcium.
