Abstract

The paper presents results of spectrographic observations of the night sky Hα emission, made at the Abastumani astrophysical observatory in 1958-1961. The absolute Hα intensity in direction Z=67° was measured during 115 nights (table I). Seasonal variations of I(Hα) in direction 67°N with maximum in July and additional maximum in March were obtained (fig.1 and 2). The Hα intensity ration Iz1/Iz2 for 70°N and 20°S (1.73+0.14), 67°N and 48°N (polar region) (1.4+0.1), 67°N and antisolar point (2.6+0.1) was measured (table 2). Seasonal Hα variations at polar region are characterized by only one maximum in July. It is shown that Hα maximum in March is the result of galactic Hα contamination: in these spectra N II 6583A line simultaneously with increasing Hα was observed (fig.3). The galactic part of Hα emission may be measured from simultaneous observations at the give direction and polar region. The results of observations may be explained as resonans scattering of solar Lyman radiation by neutral hydrogen in geocorona and upper atmosphere. The seasonal Hα variations with maximum in summer may be connected with seasonal variations of terrestrial shadow altitude in the given direction. The seasonal Hα curve was compared with Johnson's data of hydrogen concentration in geocorona above the shadow boundary (fig.2). From observation 8-9 VIII 1961(fig.4) in antisolar direction the ratio I1/I2 ~ 0.1-0.2 for secondary and primary scattering of solar Lyman radiation was obtained. Some correlation of I(Hα) with OH bands intensity was observed (fig.5). April, 1962
