Title of the Presentation: Doctoral Education in Social Work: Lessons Learned from the Case of Georgia Abstract: One of the strengths of a profession depends on its empirically derived knowledge base as it informs its practice and empowers practitioners through research. As a result of its vulnerable history, Social Work still struggles with its professional identity, remaining sensitive to the allegation that it lacks a unique subject matter or methodology, which creates a void in creating evidence based practices. All of these highlights needs for increasing visibility of social work as a scientific discipline. The historical analysis of social work development worldwide shows one direct way of promoting social work as a science is to establish sound doctoral programs in “research university settings” (Reid, 2011). The main question that will be answered is how to develop the standards based, innovative social work doctoral program in the post-Soviet context while social work is a newly established academic discipline. This presentation describes characteristics of social work doctoral program at Ilia State University, Georgia. The whole process of developing the social work doctoral program is discussed in detail. It included the establishment of the research center, doctoral curriculum development, identification of the main competences of doctoral graduates, and employers’ and labor market research. The main challenges revealed are limited numbers of qualified social work professors in academia, employers’ low awareness of the need for doctoral level social workers, consideration of social work as the only practice based profession among practitioners as well as in academia. However, service providers understand the need for effectiveness-based program assessment. As a recommendation, the presentation will highlight the power of social work research (e.g. translational research) on the provision of innovative services across different social work sectors by bridging the science and service communities. Key Words: Science of Social Work, Social Work Research, Social Work Education in Post-soviet countries, Doctoral Education in Social Work, Georgia
