Abstract
This article contains the results of an investigation of selective absorption in the Local System and symmetrically to it on the other side of the galactic plane (KSA97, 73, 48 and 99. 75, 5, 50, 25, 10; fig. 1). This investigation is an attempt to explain the cause of the anomaly of the distribution of the bright stars in relation to the galactic plane: whether this anomaly is caused by absorption, or by the real existence of the Local System. For those stars of the investigated areas, which are included in the Humanson's catalogue, the color-indices are determined and values of the color-excess are derived. It appears that the selective absorption in the Local System is less than that in the symmetrical region (Table IV). We have to acknowledge, however, that the difference is not so great as to explain the phenomena of the Local System by cosmic absorption only and to assert the unreality of the Local System. But a very different general absorption may correspond to the approximately similar selective absorption, this being a question of a special research. July, 1939.
