Abstract

Teaching of literacy is a complex process of language activity. It helps pupils to assimilate letters and sounds of the target language, its vocabulary and grammar, to develop habits and skills in pronunciation, speaking and reading. This process is more difficult in English – there are 26 letters and 146 graphems which represent 46 phonemes. But in Georgian the quantity of the letters and phonemes are identical. That’s why the methods of teaching literacy in these languages must be different. The major principles (strategies) of construction textbooks of Georgian Alphabet are: 1.The analytical-synthetic method of teaching writing and reading; 2. The simultaneous teaching of writing and reading; 3. The way of writing and reading; 4. Writing in four-lined net; 5. The principle of illustration and selecting words for “analization”.
