Abstract

The article analyses the narrative structure of a later novel of the German writer Arno Schmidt Die Schule der Atheisten. The novel consists of three different diegetic levels. The intradiegetic story about the journey to the Spenser Island is narrated by the old senator William Kolderup. With this semi-fictive story, which apparently should have happened 45 years ago, he aims to construct a sort of the common past for his honourable guests, foreign ministers of the USA and China. These countries are involved in the permanent conflict, however now in 2014 in the face of the invasion from the outer space the consolidation of the rests of the world civilisation (represented by the USA, China and the small cultural reservation in Tellingstedt) is more important then ever. And the old senator constructs a story that is going to reconciliate the hostile powers. There are many signals in this story which point to the narrator’s unreliability. Still it is its being fitctive that helps to save the planet and the small cultural reservation in the middle of Europe. Thus the fiction as a result of the unreliable narration appears to be a means of the reconciliation of the mankind with the preservation of the culture.
